Avast Is Blocking A Download From Discord
Avast antivirus is known to block up to 99% of the virus from your system while doing this, it sometimes blocks the trusted websites or programs because of wrong detections. These are known as Avast false positives. To unblock these sites you can add them to Avast Exceptions/whitelist.
Avast Exception or Avast Whitelist is a kind of list where you can add those programs or websites which you consider trusted but Avast has shown false positives. These websites can be unblocked by using Avast add exception option. Although Avast Firewall works best in most cases to block unwanted spammy webs and services, users report about Avast blocking certain games, discord, visual studio, FileZilla, and Utorrent. It gets really frustrating when you know that a blocked item is a trusted app still you can't access it because of a false positive from Avast Antivirus.
If this is happening with your trusted websites too, here we will guide you on how to add Avast Exceptions/Whitelist to unblock programs and websites. Avast sometimes blocks popular services like Steam Gaming Engine by suspecting it as a potential threat. In such cases it this guide will be handy to help you with managing the list to allow the program.
Add games, programs, and Websites to Avast Exceptions/Whitelist
Let's now start with the process to Add programs and websites to Avast Exception/Whitelist. But before you move ahead to learn in avast how to add exceptions, we would recommend you to first check such programs or websites using any other antivirus tool to confirm that they are really clean or not.
Usually, users get this message when a webpage is blocked by Avast Firewall "Avast web shield has blocked access to this page".
The first thing you would need to understand is the type of Avast Exceptions available in Avast Antivirus. Here are the types of exception lists of Avast-
- Global Exclusion list for any programme/file/folder to prevent them totally from Avast scanning.
- Global Exclusion for Website/URL to stop scanning them from avast.
- Exclusion list for specific Shield.
1. Global Exclusion list for any programme/file/folder
If you want to ignore file or exclude any application you can use this Global Exclusion list to stop scanning for these files. You can also ignore any programme using this list. The list would also allow a website, URL or domain in your PC. Here are are the steps with which you can allow programme/file/folder etc.-
- Open Avast antivirus in your PC and head to the settings of this antivirus.
- Now, click on the general tab.
- Under the General tab, you would see an option for Exclusions.
- Click on it and here you would need to provide the path of the file or folder add to Avast whitelist. Option to add URLs is also provided in the Global list of Avast Exceptions.
- This will now allow programmes or website in your PC and will prevent it from scanning in Avast.
2. Global Exclusion for Website/URL to stop scanning them from avast
This list is useful when you want to specifically allow website or URL in the Avast and prevent it from the Avast False positive. Here any specific domain or URL can be added. It does not provide any option to add files or to exclude applications. Here is how to whitelist a website or URL specifically-
- Go to the Dashboard of the Avast antivirus.
- Click on Settings and then go to General Tab.
- Now, in this General tab, look for the Exclusions option.
- Here in the URL's tab, add the specific Website you want Avast to allow.
- Confirm by clicking on the OK button.
- This will now add your website to the Avast Exception list.
3. Exclusion list for specific Shield for Avast Whitelist
This setting is to exclude a specific Shield from avast. Using this you would be able to whitelist a shield be it file shield, web shield or mail shield and games completely. Let's check how to add a specific shield to the exclusion list-
- Go to the Dashboard of Avast antivirus.
- Now click on the settings option.
- In the setting, look for Active Protection and click on it.
- Here select the shield name (web, game, file, mail) which you want to add in the exception list.
- Now click on Customize link.
- Here find the menu in exclusions.
- Add those which you want to ignore by the shield.
- You can also specify when you want to apply these exclusions for example when reading, writing or executing.
Restart All Avast Shield after adding Avast Exceptions
Once you have set all the Exclusions in the Whitelist of avast, you would need to restart all Shields so that Avast can set them as exclusions and ignore them from next scan. To restart the shields you would need to follow these steps-
- In your Windows Taskbar, click on the up arrow to find the avast icon in the system tray.
- Right-Click on it. In the opened menu, click on the Avast Sheilds Control.
- Now click on 'Disable for 10 minutes'.
- repeat the process and click on Avast Sheilds control.
- Click on enable all shields.
- It will now not show the exclusions as avast false positive and will ignore files from scanning.
- Now you can restart your PC.

Whenever You get Avast false positive, you should report it to Avast. This would help Avast to ignore such things from next time. This will help Avast on not blocking the trusted web applications in the future.
- To report you would just have to click on the report link which you will get on the pop up of the file or website blocked. Click on 'Report the file as false positive'
- Here you will find a simple form to fill and a column for additional info will be available.
- Fill the form and in additional info column paste the link of any other online antivirus which marked the file or programme as clean already.
- Now click on 'I know what I am doing' and click on the submit button.
These were the steps to add items in Avast Whitelist/exceptions. You can now use any program or file freely as avast would no longer detect it as false positive. Be careful while using this guide when you want to manage your list of Avast Exclusions. Never trust any app/game/web from unknown sources and add them to Avast Ignore List as this can potentially harm your computer and you might get to compromise your web security. Always double check the web service you want Avast to stop from scanning.
